PROFILE OF A SERVANT.
PROFILE OF A SERVANT.
I would like us to consider the fact that we, as Christians, are to be servants. The very core of our faith lies in the way we learn and follow Jesus as a servant, and not as those who expect to be served. He has clearly taught us how to do so, and by example in His life on earth ,demonstrated that often. So let's turn our attention to some important Scriptures that demonstrates Jesus as a servant.
Jesus, our standard for life as Christians, was the perfect servant. Notice his discussion with the apostles about this important subject.
"It is not so among you, but whoever wishes to become great among you SHALL BE YOUR SERVANT, and whoever wishes to be first among you shall be your slave; just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but TO SERVE, and to give His life a ransom for many " (Matthew 20:26-28)
What was it about Jesus' character that made Him the greatest of servants? May I suggest His love, mercy, compassion, humbleness, and patience, and selflessness among other special traits of His life. Should this not be a lesson for us? He is our example, and standard to follow. Notice one of the apostle Paul's admonishments for God's people in the Galatian letter.
"For you were called to freedom, brethren, only do not turn your freedom into an opportunity for the flesh, but THROUGH LOVE SERVE ONE ANOTHER." (Galatians 5:13)
Jesus had a discussion with one of the Jewish lawyers in Luke 10. IN that discussion the lawyer asked Him, "Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?"
In His answer to him, Jesus asked a question: "What is written in the law? How does it read"? Notice the answer that was given.
"And he answered and said, YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOU GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR STENGTH, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND; AND YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF." (Luke 10:26,27)
Since love is the very heart of our ability to be servants, to both God and our fellow man, Jesus points this out to that man . Jesus answered him, "You have answered correctly; do this AND YOU WILL LIVE." (Luke 10;28f) He is saying, "love must be the motivation in all we do as we fulfill our responsibility as servants.
In Paul's letter to the church at Corinth, you may remember this in his teaching about love in chapter 13. "If I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but do not have LOVE , I have become a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal." "But now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the GREATEST OF THESE IS LOVE." (1 Corinthians 13:1,13)
We must conclude, to be good SERVANTS it must by motivated by our love for God and for our fellow man. Each soul is important to Him, and should be to us also. We can be the kind of people who help save souls if we learn to be good SERVANTS.
